San Francisco Tour
San Francisco has so many options that it’s difficult to tell you where to begin. Here, however, is one route that will provide a pleasant day out.
Start off at the Exploratorium located at 3601 Lyon Street. You’ll probably spend an hour or two here and at the surrounding Palace of Fine Arts.
Star Wars buffs or those wanting a bit of walk can head to the Presidio and the Letterman Digital Arts Center, headquarters of director George Lucas’s Lucasfilm. The Presidio is essentially across the street from the Exploratorium, although it might not look that way depending on where you park.
If you’re driving, take a right out of the Exploratorium parking lot onto Marina Boulevard and then, after just 0.2 mile, take another right onto Broderick Street. Travel 0.5 mile, turn right onto Lombard Street, and go through the Lombard Gate entrance into the Presidio. You’ll see the Lucasfilm headquarters on your right and will have several parking options. You’re free to walk around the grounds and the Lucasfilm land.
Another option after leaving the Exploratorium or the Presidio sends you across Marina Boulevard to the Chrissy Field and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Again, you can park and walk around on the edge of the water. The Wave Organ is located at the end of Yacht Road behind the boats. The Green Street Lab and the California Academy of Sciences can be reached by car in about fifteen minutes from any of these points.
If you’re sans children and looking for an afternoon pint and a bit of adventure, cruise over to the corner of Geary and Larkin. You’ll be just one block from both the Edinburgh Castle (950 Geary) and O’Farrell Street Bar (corner of O’Farrell and Larkin). These pubs are in colorful Tenderloin District of San Francisco, which has a high homeless quotient and a lot of character.
